Two people have been arrested in Amesbury this morning, on suspicion of assaulting two police officers – one of which suffered a serious leg injury.

At approximately 2.45am, officers were driving along Mill Green Road when they stopped to speak to a man who was walking in the middle of the road.

The man became aggressive with the officers and was then arrested.

During the arrest the man became violent and one of the officers sustained a serious leg injury which required hospital treatment and is likely to require surgery. A second officer at the scene also sustained a minor injury but has been discharged from hospital.

Detective Constable Lucy Thorne said: “Detectives would like to speak with anybody that was in Mill Green Road between 2.30am and 3am, who may have seen officers dealing with a man and a woman in the street.

“There were at least two members of the public that assisted the officers during the incident and a taxi driver in the vicinity – we are really keen to speak to these people immediately. We believe they may have information which could help our investigation.”

A 20-year-old local man was arrested on suspicion of GBH on an officer and taken to Melksham custody. A 21-year-old woman was also later arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer. Both remain in Melksham custody for questioning.

Anyone with information should contact Salisbury CID on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
