A man has been charged over a serious incident involving a knife and death threats at a homeless hostel in Chippenham this week.
Wiltshire Police said officers responded to a “significant disorder” at Unity House in Wood Lane on Tuesday (5 August).
It’s claimed the man was found to be in possession of a kitchen knife and making threats to others at the supported living property.
A force spokesman said that the serious incident “followed several reports relating to the same individual over the previous days, which had caused concern within the community”.
While being arrested, the man allegedly assaulted three police officers – also threatening to kill them and others known to him.
55-year-old Richard Hubbard, of Unity House, Chippenham, appeared at Salisbury Magistrates’ Court today (Thursday) – having been remanded in police custody.
According to a statement, Wiltshire Police secured charges of possession of a bladed article in a public place, three counts of threats to kill, three counts of assault on an emergency worker and six public order offences.
Acting Inspector Jamie Ball, of the Chippenham Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “This kind of behaviour is completely unacceptable in our town.
“The swift and robust response by our officers, resulting in charges and a remand into custody, demonstrates our commitment to dealing firmly with those who commit criminal offences and pose a risk to our community.
“It also highlights the speed and effectiveness of our officers, who work around the clock to keep people safe.
“We also pay tribute to Sergeant Harris and her team of officers and Neighbourhood PCSOs who worked tirelessly through the evening to gather all the necessary evidence to secure charges and a remand for all offences committed.
“This case will automatically be referred to Wiltshire Police Licensing Officer Richard Tottle, who will present details of the offences at the upcoming Pubwatch meeting with all licensees in the town.
“We continue to urge anyone with concerns or information about disorder in their area to contact us. Your information helps us take swift action to protect the public and bring offenders to justice.”
