The M4 in Wiltshire is blocked as emergency services are called to a car crash.
999 crews are responding to a road traffic collision on the motorway eastbound between junctions 17 and 16.
Traffic is at a standstill, with motorists queuing. The westbound carriageway is also slow past the scene.
A local resident, who is stuck in the closure, told Wiltshire 999s that he can see a damaged car – from what appears to be a rear-end shunt.
National Highways are describing the incident as a breakdown.
A spokesperson said: “There are delays of 40 minutes and congestion of approx. 3 miles on the M4 eastbound between J17 Stanton St Quintin and J16 near Swindon due to a broken down vehicle in live lane 1.
“National Highways Traffic Officers have been deployed to scene. Please allow extra travel time.”
