Firefighters are braced after an amber wildfire alert was issued for Wiltshire.
In the first warning of the year, the fire service is preparing to tackle flames on large areas of open land – like farmers’ fields and heathlands.
The alert is in place across most of England and Wales for today (Saturday, 11 May) and tomorrow (Sunday, 12 May).
An amber alert means that, should a wildfire be experienced, it could spread quickly and easily due to the dry conditions – putting the lives of people and wildlife at risk.
But Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service says people should also take care when having barbecues or bonfires at home.
Group Manager Stuart Gillion said: “With a period of warm weather underway, we would urge people to take real care when enjoying the sunshine in our beautiful countryside.
“If you’re visiting our heathlands, woodlands or countryside, please avoid having a campfire and take a picnic rather than use a disposable barbecue – just a few simple steps can make a real difference to preventing fires from starting.”
He added: “We’d also remind people to take care if having a barbecue or bonfire at home. All too often, we see property destroyed when an initially small fire suddenly gets out of control.
“Never leave a bonfire or barbecue unattended, and site them well away from fences, trees or buildings.”
What should you do if you discover a wildfire?
- Keep a safe distance – never try to tackle the fire yourself
- Call 999 and ask for the fire service
- Give location of the fire – If necessary use the free what3words website or app
