Hundreds of military personnel have attended hard-hitting road safety presentations delivered by police across Wiltshire.
Officers from Wiltshire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Team and Roads Policing Unit visited Tidworth Garrison and Colerne Camp to highlight the devastating consequences of drink-driving.
The presentations featured footage from real collision investigations, local case studies and collision data to demonstrate the impact a single decision can have on victims, families and offenders.
Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service also attended the events, bringing a crashed vehicle and demonstrating how crews rescue people trapped following serious collisions.
PC Mike Handscomb said: “There is still a dangerous misconception that people can judge when they’re safe to drive after drinking.
“Too often, people convince themselves they’re fine, that nothing will happen, or that they won’t get caught.
“Our presentations use powerful real-life stories and local collision data to show the very real consequences of drink-driving.
“We know that one message, delivered in the right way at the right time, can be enough to change a decision.
“If our work prevents just one person from driving under the influence, then it could prevent a serious collision, save a career, or even save a life.”
Those convicted of drink-driving can receive a criminal record, an automatic driving ban of at least 12 months, an unlimited fine and up to six months in prison.
A conviction can also affect employment, significantly increase insurance costs and restrict international travel.
