Tesco has apologised after one of its delivery drivers blocked a fire engine responding to a 999 call in Wiltshire.
Royal Wootton Bassett firefighters said their water carrier was temporarily unable to pass along a road on Monday (17 August) because of how a van had been parked.
The blockage had been caused by a delivery driver for Tesco, who had been unloading shopping to a customer.
The driver moved the vehicle after becoming aware of the emergency appliance, allowing firefighters to continue their journey to the emergency call.
Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service has since urged motorists to consider whether they are leaving enough room for emergency vehicles when parking on public roads.
A spokesperson said: “We urge anyone who parks on any public highway, to consider the gap you are leaving is big enough for a fire engine to get through.
“If it gets us through, an ambulance and police vehicle can also pass.”
Tesco has apologies – confirming that staff are trained to ensure they don’t block routes.
A spokesperson said: “We’re really sorry to hear about this, we provide clear training to all our drivers that they should always try to park safely and considerately when making home deliveries.
“As soon as the driver was aware of the emergency vehicle, they were able to move and allow it to continue on its journey.”
The fire service has not disclosed where the incident happened or provided further details about the emergency its crews were attending.
