The Duke of Edinburgh Prince Philip has died at the age of 99, Buckingham Palace says.
“It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh”, a royal family spokesperson said.
Adding: “His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.
“The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.”
The Duke of Edinburgh went on to have an operation on his heart on 3 March, which went successfully. Just two days later he was transferred back to the King Edward VII Hospital and eventually left the hospital on 16 March following his longest ever stay in hospital.
Prince Phillip was born on 10 June 1921 in Mon Repos, Corfu – the son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg. He married Princess Elizabeth on 20 November 1947 and has been by her side ever since, raising four children.
For most of his life, Prince Phillip had been known as the Duke of Edinburgh. He was bestowed the title by King George VI on 19 November 1947 ahead of his marriage to the then Princess Elizabeth.
Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, is expected to be bestowed the title of Duke of Edinburgh when his older brother The Prince of Wales, Prince Charles, becomes King.
