A driver has crashed into a bush after suffering a medical episode in Swindon.

Emergency services raced to Bruce Street Bridges following reports of a serious incident unfolding – as members of the public started their resuscitation efforts.

Police officers and paramedics, including a critical care team from Wiltshire Air Ambulance travelling in a car, quickly arrived on scene.

Two fire crews were initially called over fears the man may be trapped in the vehicle.

After making the scene safe, firefighters assisted 999 crews by holding up blue sheets to obstruct the view of passing motorists.

Resuscitation and stabilisation efforts were ongoing until around 9.30am, when the casualty – believed to be a man – was put into an ambulance and rushed to hospital for further treatment.

The Wiltshire Air Ambulance helicopter later landed at Great Western Hospital, where its thought they will transfer the patient to specialist hospital in Bristol.

It’s understood the driver crashed their car into a bush on Great Western Way after suffering a cardiac arrest.

The road is closed between Bruce Street Bridges Roundabout and Oasis Roundabout, but is expected to reopen by about 10.30am.
