A stabbing attack in Swindon has turned to into a murder probe after the victim died in hospital.
Emergency services raced to save the life of a local man after he was knifed in Broad Street at around 9pm yesterday evening (Tuesday 11 July).
Despite their best efforts of first responders at the scene and medical teams in hospital, he was pronounced dead in the early hours of today (Wednesday).
He has since been named locally as Neil Bambrick, aged in his 40s, from Swindon.
Wiltshire Police say a man, aged in his 40s, has been arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody for questioning.
Tributes have streamed in on social media, with family and friends loving words and pictures.
“One of the kindest people I have ever met… you had such a big heart”, one person wrote.
Another said: “Life is so cruel, this should never have happened, knife crime needs to be stopped and better policed rest in peace Neil.”
A house and part of Broad Street, between Ponting Street and Alfred Street, remains cordoned off for forensic investigation work.
A second crime scene is in place in a lay-by immediately outside Swindon railway station on Station Road, opposite the Great Western Hotel.
Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector Phil Walker of the Major Crime Investigation Team, said: “We have launched a murder investigation after a report that a man was stabbed in Broad Street, Swindon, yesterday evening.
“I understand this will cause great concern in the community, but please be reassured that we will be conducting a thorough investigation to find out what has happened.
“We have arrested a man in his 40s on suspicion of murder and he is in custody for questioning.
“We have established scenes in Broad Street, Swindon, and Galsworthy Close, Liden, and residents will see lots of police activity while we carry out enquiries.
“I’d like to appeal to anybody who witnessed what happened last night to please get in touch with us.
