A man is fighting for his life after a stabbing outside Cabot Circus in Bristol city centre.
Police raced to reports of a disorder involving a knife in Bond Street, near McDonald’s, at around 11.30am on Tuesday morning (28 May).
A man, aged in his 40s, sustained stab wounds – and was taken to Southmead Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.
The alleged knifeman, a 37-year-old local man, was disarmed and then detained by brave members of the public.
He was subsequently arrested by officers – who arrived within two minutes of the emergency calls – on suspicion of inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent.
During an examination of the scene by forensics, a knife was uncovered and seize.
37-year-old Ian McInally, of Talbot Avenue, Bristol, has since been charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a blade in public.
He remains in police custody pending an appearance at Bristol Magistrates’ Court today (Wednesday).
In a statement yesterday, Investigating officer T/DC Andrew Smetham said: “Several members of the public bravely intervened in this incident after seeing it take place.
“They disarmed a man with a knife and prevented him from leaving the area before officers arrived.
“There is never any expectation on people to intervene in acts of violence and I’d like to recognise the courage it will have taken those who put themselves in harm’s way.
“Another member of the public also came to the aid of the injured man, giving him first aid, and they too deserve praise.
“While we don’t believe there is any ongoing risk to the public, neighbourhood officers will remain in the area and will continue to carry out patrols in the city centre to provide reassurance.”
