A housing association has quelled rumours about the cause of a blaze in Melksham.
Despite the best efforts of more than 25 firefighters, two flats were completely destroyed in Sangster Avenue shortly before 8pm on Saturday 18 April.
It’s understood that the occupants had moved into the first-floor property just hours prior to the major fire – which swiftly demolished to roof.

Selwood Housing, who own the building, have spoken out – confirming that they are helping the residents affected by the incident with temporary accommodation.
They also addressed rumours circulating on social media about the cause of the inferno.
A spokesperson said: “On the evening of Saturday 18 April, a fire broke out at one of our properties, impacting two flats on the corner of Sangster Avenue and Milton Road in Melksham. Both households were able to evacuate safely.
“We appreciate the shock of such an incident for those impacted and the surrounding community. Our teams’ thoughts and actions right now are to provide necessary support.
“Our colleagues attended the fire alongside the emergency services, to secure overnight accommodation where needed.”

They added: “We’d like to thank the work of the local emergency services and utility providers for their swift response to the incident and for supporting us to secure the building and make the area safe.
“We’re aware there has been speculation about the cause of the fire. The fire service investigation has now confirmed that the fire was accidental and not due to an electrical fault.
“Our teams are focussed on supporting our customers impacted into temporary accommodation, whilst we establish the extent of the damage to the building and plan next steps.
“We will do everything we can to support our customers affected by this fire. Local residents with any questions or concerns are encouraged to contact us.”
