A warning has been issued after children who swam in the River Kennet at Ramsbury became unwell, with one hospitalised.
Ramsbury and Axford Parish Council said it had been informed of the illnesses and is urging people not to swim in the river near the villages.
In a statement, the council said: “The Parish Council has been informed that some children who swam in the River Kennet at Ramsbury and Axford have been ill with one hospitalised.
“Please DO NOT swim in the river near Ramsbury and Axford.”
The children became ill after swimming on 30-31 May. It’s understood one child involved accidently took in a mouthful of water.
It added that it had contacted Action for the River Kennet, also known as ARK, for advice.
The council said: “Children who go in the river in wellies to ‘dip’ or fish should always wash hands and face thoroughly before eating or drinking.”
A river school session involving Ramsbury Primary School took place on 1 June. The parish council said there have been no reports of illness linked to that session.
It also confirmed checks had been carried out and there have been no sewage discharges into the river in the 10 days prior.
Residents can check for sewage discharges using the Thames Water Event Duration Monitoring map and storm discharge data via www.thameswater.co.uk.
ARK outlined its usual safety protocol for those entering the river.
The organisation said: “Our usual protocol for everyone in the river with us (adults and children) is to avoid touching your face, ie eyes, ears, nose and mouth.
“Also to cover any grazes with waterproof plasters before entering the river and to anti bac gel hands after being in the river and before eating or drinking; and the wash hands with soap and water when home.”
