Emergency services were called to a field off the A338 near Burbage, six miles south of Marlborough, shortly after 4pm on Sunday (31 May).

The pilot of a glider, a woman aged in her 60s, was attempting to make a controlled landing when the aircraft struck power lines and fell to the ground.

Great Western Air Ambulance (GWAAC) was deployed alongside multiple police, fire and ambulance crews – urgently treating the pilot for serious wounds sustained.

She was airlifted to the Major Trauma Centre at Southmead Hospital in Bristol. Wiltshire Police say the woman suffered life-changing injuries.

The British Gliding Association confirmed that the Air Accident Investigation Branch has launched an investigation into the crash.

A GWAAC spokesperson said: “Our crew were tasked to an incident in Burbage at 16:17 on 31.5.26.

“They responded by helicopter with a Critical Care Doctor, a Specialist Paramedic and a Trainee Specialist Paramedic on board.

“They treated a patient on scene, before airlifting them to hospital for further treatment.”

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service added that a single crew from Marlborough were mobilised to reports of glider colliding with power cables.

“The pilot was already out of the glider when we arrived, so firefighters made the scene safe and supported the other emergency services”, a spokesperson said.
