A teenage boy has been convicted of seriously injuring an elderly woman by crashing into her on a stolen moped in Swindon last year.
Several dads on the school run detained the 14-year-old after the collision on a public footpath near Covingham Park shortly after 3pm on Wednesday 4 November.
As first reported by Wiltshire 999s, he was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and theft of a motor vehicle as the elderly woman was given emergency first aid near Martinfield.
At Wiltshire Youth Court on 16 February, the teenager – who cannot be named for legal reasons – pleaded guilty to seriously injuring a woman by dangerous driving, to stealing the Suzuki moped involved, driving it moped on a public footpath and without insurance.
The boy was also convicted of a number of other offences including possession of a knife in public (x2), grievous bodily harm (GBH), actual bodily harm (ABH), threatening behaviour, damaging MJ Kebabs and Pizza’s shop window to the value of £1,700, theft of a bicycle, and damaging a Mini Cooper to the value of £2,500.
Overall, he was sentenced to 18 months of detention and a training order in a secure centre. Four months of that related to the causing serious injury by dangerous driving offence.
The boy was also disqualified from holding a driving license for three years.
