Swindon’s Oasis Leisure Centre is a venue that is rich in cultural history and renowned for its distinct dome-shaped structure. While the venue has been left abandoned since its closure back in 2020, it looks like the doors have finally opened, but not how we all expected them to.

The leisure centre has consistently been a hot topic in Swindon, with many residents calling for the site to be saved. The future of the site has come back into the light thanks to reports of an Apple TV production being filmed in the dome.

While the use of the venue for a new show is exciting, many Swindon residents have been left wondering when the Oasis will reopen its doors to the public.

Since the loss of the leisure centre back in 2020, residents have been missing the venue’s iconic wave machine and Domebusters, leaving many fighting to see the venue restored to its former glory.

With the town in dire need of more entertainment options, such as a family pool with slides, and even a casino to liven up the town’s nightlife, online options such as gaming and online casinos, like the ones on UK casino guides, have taken centre stage, for now at least. Elias Malo has selected several UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) approved sites, each of which comes with thousands of slot games and offers plenty of free spin bonuses.

Although online entertainment might replace the Oasis, online entertainment is a great way to pass the time, while waiting to check out the new TV show being filmed at the venue, and hopefully, the eventual renovation and reopening of it.

The venue was already famous due to its significant role in the UK’s music scene after hosting numerous renowned artists, including The Stranglers, Van Morrison, and Kings of Leon.

However, it gained the heights of fame in the ’90s when it became linked to one of the biggest British bands of all time, Oasis, who got their name after Liam Gallagher saw an Inspiral Carpets tour poster from the venue.

Recent reports suggest that this time the Oasis could be world-famous thanks to the filming of Apple TV’s upcoming Japanese Sci-Fi series, Neuromancer. The show is an adaptation of a 1984 novel of the same name.

For Swindon residents, the filming represents a bittersweet moment. On one hand, it highlights the continued relevance of the Oasis and showcases its potential as a creative and cultural space. On the other, it serves as a reminder of the centre’s closure and the uncertainty surrounding its future.

The fact that a major streaming service has chosen the Oasis as a filming location could provide a much-needed boost to campaigns seeking to restore the venue. If the site is featured in a popular Apple TV series, it may attract wider attention and support for its preservation.

As Swindon waits for more information about the Apple TV production, the debate over the future of the Oasis continues. Although, with Seven Capital, the new owner of the Oasis having submitted a planning application, Swindon Residents are hopeful to finally visit the leisure centre sometime in the near future.

The application proposes to update the pool with a modern skin, which would use the same technology as the Eden Project in Cornwall, as well as several new facilities, such as a café, gym, bowling alley and indoor golf.

As well as reviving the leisure centre, regeneration specialists Seven Capital have also proposed creating an entirely new neighbourhood around the Oasis, which would include up to 710 new homes, as well as other local amenities.

While many residents have started to come to terms with the fact that the Oasis might not ever open its doors again, it seems this year will play a pivotal role in the building’s already rich history. Starting with the filming of a brand new Apple TV show, and hopefully ending with the revival and reopening of the leisure centre to the public.
