Police were deployed in Swindon last night (Tuesday) following reports of gunfire at an ex-footballer’s home – here’s everything we know about the shooting.
Armed officers were sent to Watermead, off Ermin Street in Stratton, at around 8.15pm after it was reported that a firearm was discharged in the street.
Officers found a smashed window on the front door of a detached house lived in by retired Premier League footballer Fitzroy Simpson, 52. He played for Swindon Town FC before joining Manchester City.
A manhunt, supported by a police dog, got underway in the area. The National Police Air Service helicopter from Bournemouth raced to join the hunt at around 9pm.
Despite what Wiltshire Police described as “extensive searches”, no suspect was located.
The property, its front garden and surrounding green space was cordoned off until around 1pm today (Wednesday), whilst a search dog and detectives examined the crime scene.
It’s thought police were hoping to track down the firearm used in the attack – but nothing of note was found.
Simpson was spotted outside his home as officers continued their investigation, visiting two neighbours before being picked up by a friend driving a Lamborghini Urus.
In a statement, the force said: “Police were called to an address in Stratton shortly after 8.15pm yesterday evening following reports of what was believed to be a firearm being discharged in the area.
“Firearms officers attended and extensive area searches and house to house enquiries were conducted. Enquiries remain ongoing. No firearms were located.
“Anyone with information is urged to call 101 and quote log number 279 of December 13.”
Local councillor Russell Holland confirmed, following communication with the police, that nobody was injured during the incident and officers don’t believe there is a risk to the wider public.
He added that additional police patrols will be carried out in the area.
