A group of children ‘standing on a frozen pond’ sparked a police response yesterday (Tuesday).

The concerning incident happened just 48 hours after the tragedy in Solihull – which saw four children lose their lives after falling through an ice-covered lake.

Wiltshire Police were contacted by a member of the public who reported concerns about children at the edge of The Crammer in Devizes at 3.30pm.

An officer was sent to the scene and engaged with three youths found close to the icy pond.

A local resident reported seeing them “standing on the ice, breaking it and taking a few tricks” before being “approached by a police officer”.

A force spokesperson confirmed that “officers attended and gave safety advice”, adding that “no further actions was required”.

In an earlier statement following a similar incident in Swindon on Monday, Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “The tragic events in Solihull are an awful reminder of the dangers of going onto frozen ponds, lakes, canals and other waterways.

“Our thoughts are with the families affected and the emergency responders who tried so hard to save those three lives.

“Please keep children and dogs away from frozen areas, as the ice may be incredibly brittle.”
