A man attacked on a building site in Purton was stabbed ‘deep into his brain’ with a screwdriver, his family has confirmed.
Emergency services responded to reports of a serious assault at the Wain Homes housing development Widham Gardens at around 11.05am on Thursday (23 July).
A 25-year-old man was stabbed in the head with a screwdriver, sustaining a life-threatening injury.
Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance was scrambled and following treatment on scene, the victim was airlifted to the Major Trauma Centre at Southmead Hospital in Bristol.
In an update, his family said that the screwdriver went “deep into the left side of this brain”.
They added that he underwent a five-hour surgery, were “half his skull” was removed. He remains in hospital fighting for his life.
Following the attack, police launched an urgent search for the suspect – who its claimed fled the building site.
A 36-year-old man, who is known to the victim, has since been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
Another 36-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. They have been taken into custody for questioning.
In a statement yesterday, DCI Deb Hatch said: “This is a serious incident which has left a man fighting for his life in hospital.
“His family have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.
“I can confirm that we have arrested two people in connection with the incident and we are not currently looking for anybody else.
“I’d like to reassure the community that this is believed to be a targeted, isolated incident and there is no wider threat to the public.
“There will be an increased policing presence in the area in the coming hours and days.
“If you witnessed what happened and we haven’t spoken with you, or you have any concerns, please come forward and speak with one of our officers.”
