A cat is critically unwell after a family were able to flee a fire in Royal Wootton Bassett.
Emergency services responded to reports of a blaze at a residential property in High Street at around 6.30pm on Wednesday (25 February).
A woman, a toddler and a baby were able to escape the flames – but the family’s cat remained inside for some time.
The animal was taken to the vets for urgent care, while the the occupants were looked after by the team at Oscar Grill – the kebab shop next door.
“A fire broke out in our kitchen”, the woman stated in an update on social media.
Adding: ‘I managed to get myself and two kids out but our cat is still fighting as she was in there a long time.
‘Thank you to the kebab shop for helping and keeping me and my daughter fed and safe while [firefighters] sorted it.
‘I never thought I’d be pulling a 2 year old and 4 month old from a burning building. Thanks everyone who supported us tonight.’
A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Crews from Westlea and Swindon were called to Royal Wootton Bassett High Street at 5.56pm yesterday evening following reports of a property fire.
“The incident involved a fire within a kitchen of a first floor flat.
“Two breathing apparatus wearers used a hose reel and main jet to extinguish the fire.
“Our stop was in at 7.28pm and a fire investigation is underway.”
