999 crews have been deployed to rescue people from a major flood in Marlborough.

Emergency services were called this afternoon (Friday) after a significant chunk of the town was submerged.

Numerous fire appliances, ambulance crews and police are working to evacuate people from their homes.

Firefighters are using a boat to help get people and pets to safety, some residents carrying suitcases and pillows uncertain when they’ll be able to return.

The area affected is south of the High Street, including London Road, The Parade, Kennet Place and Angel Yard are affected – to name just a few.

In response to the incident, Marlborough Town Council has now opened up the Town Hall as a respite for residents who are unable to remain in their homes.

A spokesperson said: “The Town Council is working closely with the emergency services and Wiltshire Council to respond to the flooding situation in Marlborough.”

As well as opening the hall as an emergency response, the council revealed that their entire stock of gel sacks has already been given out to local residents and businesses.

Hundreds of flood warnings and alerts remain in place on Friday, and the Environment Agency has said that ongoing impacts are likely over the next five days because the ground is “completely saturated”.
