A woman has been critically injured after crashing a car into a tree near Westbury.
Two air ambulance crews were among the many emergency services deployed to the single vehicle road traffic collision yesterday evening (Monday, 4 March).
The incident, which happened on the A3098 close to Dilton Marsh at about 7pm, involved a SEAT Ibiza. The car left the carriageway and hit a tree on a bend close to Hisomley crossroads.
The driver, a local woman aged in her 20s, was trapped within the vehicle with significant leg and internal injuries.
Firefighters – including a crew on Trowbridge’s heavy rescue unit – worked for nearly two hours to safely extricate the casualty, who sustained life-threatening injuries.
After her extraction from the car, she was stabilised at the roadside and put into Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.
The woman was flown to the Major Trauma Centre at Southmead Hospital in Bristol for urgent care. Her family have been informed.
The road remains closed for forensic collision investigation work at the time of publishing, however, it is expected to reopen later this morning (Tuesday).
The closures are in place between Dilton Marsh and the A36 Black Dog Hill.
