A Swindon girl has died after a reported boat explosion in the Dominican Republic.
16-year-old Abbie Lainton passed away on 30 July following what has been described as a “terrible accident” while on holiday with her family.
It’s believed the incident involved a boat exploding into flames off the coast of Bayahíbe in the Dominican Republic, but this has not been formally confirmed.
Her brother and sister are also understood to have sustained serious injuries. Local media reported that 32 tourists were on board when it happened.
Becky Jamieson, who set up a fundraiser for the family on GoFundMe, said: “On 30th July 2026, Abbie Lainton tragically lost her life in a terrible accident while on holiday in the Dominican Republic.
“Becky and Gary have lost their beautiful 16-year-old daughter, and Carley and Bradley were also badly injured in the accident.
“Abbie had her whole life ahead of her. She should have been enjoying the summer with her friends and looking forward to receiving her GCSE results.
“She was so loved by her family, friends and everyone who knew her.
“This page has been set up to support the family through this unimaginable time. For Abbie Forever 16, forever loved and never forgotten.”
The Ridgeway School headteacher Helen Buttery sent a letter to parents following Abbie’s death.
She wrote: “I am incredibly sad to write and share with you that one of our Year 11 students, Abbie Lainton, has died in a tragic accident.
“Abbie was much loved at Ridgeway by staff and students alike and was a bright light in our Year 11 community.”
Adding: “Our love and thoughts are with Abbie’s family, and I know you will join us in also keeping them in your thoughts.”
