A vehicle was struck with a stone after a youth launched it from a bridge in Calne after dark.

An unknown number of young people on bicycles were seen throwing the stones from Millennium Bridge over the A4 Black Dog Hill before one hit a passing vehicle on Wednesday.

Police officers were called to the scene at around 10pm following a report of the incident but on arrival, the suspects had dispersed and couldn’t be located.

Commenting on the incident, PCSO Mark Cook said: “This behaviour was completely irresponsible and extremely dangerous by the persons involved.

“The consequences of a stone or other such item hitting a moving vehicle could of been catastrophic, which could of resulted in a collision with life-changing injuries or worse.

“This sort of behaviour will not be tolerated, and any information given will be treated with the utmost confidence. Officers were quickly on scene after the report was received, but unfortunately the youths had disappeared.

“Many of us, and our family members travel on the A4 on a daily basis. Police patrols of the bridge and surrounding areas will be increased to ensure that this sort of behaviour is not repeated.”

If you have any information which may assist police with their enquiries in relation to this matter, please contact Wiltshire Police on 101, quoting the crime reference: 54200052667.
