A man and woman have been arrested as police continue to investigate the circumstances which led to a fatal road traffic collision in Westbury.
18-year-old front-seat passenger Bethany Ovenden-Gumm suffered catastrophic injuries when a Ford Fiesta, carrying five people, left The Mead and crashed into a tree shortly before midnight on 5 February.
Despite emergency workers’ best efforts, the childcare student was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 19-year-old male driver of the crashed vehicle remains in hospital and an 18-year-old female passenger was taken to Southmead Hospital where it’s claimed she remains in an induced coma. Two other teenage passengers suffered minor injuries.
Two 19-year-olds, one male and one female, have since been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. They’ve been released under investigation.
Both suspects were driving separate vehicles – a Vauxhall Corsa and a Vauxhall Vetra.
Speculation on social media following the collision suggested the vehicles were in convoy with the Ford Focus at the time, with some locals who witnessed the convoy passing stating they were concerned about the manner of driving.
