Wiltshire’s historic market towns are undergoing a subtle but noticeable revival. The engine driving this change isn’t retail or real estate, but digital infrastructure, online enterprise, and work that no longer needs an office. Across the county, residents and businesses are adapting, and in many cases, thriving, thanks to a more connected, more flexible way of working and living.

Locals Are Living Online, And It’s Shaping Their Towns

Digital life is no longer an urban phenomenon. In Wiltshire, remote working, online and digital are part of the norm. From healthcare to banking, everything is now online, and home offices have become standard for a growing percentage of the population.

In towns such as Devizes and Calne, cafes have doubled up as co-working spaces. Community boards and WhatsApp groups have superseded local noticeboards. With the introduction of national and regional programs that bring faster broadband connections to homes, thousands of additional households have access to connections that enable remote meetings, cloud-based work and online services.

But people’s digital habits don’t stop just because the workday is over. As more people settle down into life online, they’re also spending their downtime digitally, from streamed TV and video calls to games, forums and online tournaments.

Digital entertainment is also on the rise. Online casino gaming, particularly poker, is gaining popularity among residents of Wiltshire. One reason: transparency. Players can now view traffic insights for UK platforms to see what tables are playing, which tournaments are running and what prize pools are available. Because of its visibility, participation is easier, no guesswork, no wasted logins. It’s a simple tool, but one that has opened the door for more people to explore digital gaming without the friction.

Empty Shops Are Filling Up, But Not With What You’d Expect

Wiltshire’s high streets are still the victims of retail decline, but they are also showing signs of renewal. In some of the towns, old shops have been converted into digital studios, micro offices and flexible workspaces.

A major factor was the Vibrant Wiltshire grant scheme. With grants worth between £1,000 and £10,000, it assisted local entrepreneurs to take over derelict properties and turn them into working spaces. The previous 32 empty units had reopened, in towns such as Pewsey, Melksham and Chippenham. Foto Business: A photography business in a former barbershop. A video editing area above a sandwich shop. A coworking studio in the place of an old estate agency.

These are not high-concept innovation labs. They’re small, intelligent and geared towards how people work today: across portables, on loose schedules, often juggling multiple freelance or contract projects.

Big Business Is Still Showing Up, But On Different Terms

Wiltshire is not just becoming a safe haven for small digital players. Siemens Mobility invested £100 million in a complete renovation of its Chippenham rail technology facility. The new campus, which began construction in April 2025, will house advanced manufacturing and digital research and development and keep about 800 existing jobs and potentially create additional jobs as the operations scale up.

The importance is not only in the money. The problem is that the Siemens company actually doubled down on a town in Wiltshire, rather than moving everything to a larger city. That’s a statement of intent: that places such as Chippenham are capable of supporting high-skill and high-technology work when the infrastructure is in place.

Dyson took a similar step in Malmesbury, where it already had its regional R&D facilities, rather than building the planned hub in Bristol. That attracted more than 180 digital and engineering jobs to the region, including software and AI experts.

What’s Still Holding Things Back?

Still there are obvious limitations. Many of Wiltshire’s town centre buildings are old and not suited to modern use. Retrofitting them for broadband, insulation and digital equipment is time-consuming and costly. It is even more complex on listed properties because of planning restrictions.

Transport is also a weak link. While digital work means less need to commute, the lack of any evening bus service or reliable link between towns makes it difficult for anyone to combine remote and in-person working. It also restricts access to events, co-working spaces, or workshops that are held in nearby towns.

Funding is another concern. Vibrant Wiltshire has shut its doors to new participants in 2024. If nothing is done, it is possible that secondary towns, particularly those with fewer resources, will lag behind once more.
