UPDATE: Police probe after woman reportedly falls from M4 bridge before fatal collision
The M4 is closed in both directions through Swindon following a serious incident.
Emergency services were called to the scene at around 2am this morning (Saturday, 1 October).
The motorway has been closed by National Highways between junctions 15 and 16 (Swindon).
Forensic investigation work is ongoing on the carriageway eastbound, with screens erected and two dozen evidence markers placed on the ground.
It’s not yet clear if the incident involved the road bridge in A4361 Croft Road, which is also closed in both directions and being watched by police officers.
The A-road — between Old Town and Wroughton — is closed at Black Horse Way and Woodland View.
A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “Please be advised that the M4 motorway is closed Eastbound between Junctions 16-15 and also the A4361 bridge over the M4 for the foreseeable future.
“Drivers are urged to seek alternative routes.”
The route is expected to remain closed this morning, but is likely to reopen sometime after midday.
Updates follow.
