A woman has died after reportedly falling from a bridge over the motorway in Swindon.
The fatal incident happened on the M4 at around 2am this morning (Saturday, 1 October), sparking a significant emergency response.
The young woman is understood to have fallen from the A4361 Croft Road bridge, which connects Swindon with Wroughton, before being involved in a collision on the carriageway below.
Wiltshire Police launched an investigation into the tragic death, with forensic collision investigation work undertaken throughout the morning.
The motorway was closed in both directions – with the westbound carriageway reopening at 10am. The eastbound carriageway opened at about 2pm.
In a statement, Wiltshire Police said: “We are appealing for witnesses to a fatal collision on the M4 in the early hours of this morning (01/10).
“At approximately 2am today, officers attended an incident between junction 15 and 16 of the motorway, near the road bridge (A4361) near Wroughton.
“Sadly, a young woman died at the scene. Our thoughts are with her family at this very difficult time.
