Elderly Swindon residents are being targeted with a roof inspection scam.
Wiltshire Police say the offenders have attended addresses of vulnerable or older people – usually after they have had new roofing fitted and ask to inspect it.
Once inside, they go into the loft and claim there is a leak which needs to be fixed. They proceed to give the resident a quote and ask for a deposit before leaving.
After they receive the deposit they keep returning with reasons as to why they need full payment for work they claim they will carry out in the future.
Officers are warning residents of Swindon about the scam, which has most recently been carried out in the Stratton area.
PC Charley Wilmott said: “This scam has been taking place in the Stratton area, and often the scammers claim to be from reputable companies.
“Please – if you think you may have been a victim, get in touch and let us know.
“Do not feel embarrassed – these people are often extremely convincing and forceful when taking advantage of often vulnerable people.
“Please be vigilant and if you have concerns please call 101 or 999 in an emergency.”
Anyone with further information in relation to this particular scam should call 101 and quote reference number 54240040404.
