The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has warned drivers to take extra care on the roads as daylight hours shorten.
The department said poorer visibility during the autumn and winter months can make it harder to spot hazards on Wiltshire’s routes.
It is urging drivers to ensure their vehicle lights are working correctly and are used appropriately.
Motorists are also being encouraged to keep their windscreens clean.
The DVSA said dirt and debris on the glass can significantly reduce visibility at night.
The agency added that night-time driving may highlight undetected eyesight issues.
It recommends that drivers book an eye test if they have any concerns about their vision.
Road users are also being asked to remain alert for children, cyclists and animals.
The DVSA said dark, wet and windy conditions can make it harder to see vulnerable road users and unexpected hazards.
The reminder comes during Road Safety Week, with the agency inviting people to share their own tips for safer night-time driving.
