A bus shelter claimed by a homeless man has been destroyed in a ‘deliberate’ blaze.
Fire crews were called to the scene on the A350, at the junction with Plough Lane, in Kington Langley near Chippenham, at around 4.30am this morning (Friday).
The flames were extinguished by one firefighter wearing breathing apparatus and using a hose reel jet, Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said.
An army veteran, named Chris, set up camp in the bus shelter several years ago. His presence there has been widely accepted, but some locals are against it.
The bus shelter, which is a brick structure with a roof and space for several people to take shelter from the elements, was crammed full of Chris’ possessions – including a mattress.
Thankfully, the building was empty when firefighters arrived. Nobody was hurt.
In recent days, Chris – who is an older man – has been spotted sitting next to a well-alight campfire. It was situated approximately one metre from the bus shelter.
It’s understood that despite offers of accommodation from Wiltshire Council, Chris has refused support and has indicated that he wishes to remain on the streets.
Wiltshire Police has confirmed that an arson investigation has been launched.
“Although early stages, it is believed the fire was started deliberately, however enquiries are ongoing”, a spokesperson told Wiltshire 999s.
