Wiltshire is one of those counties where you can pull on your boots, clip the lead on and head out without overthinking it. From ancient landmarks to sweeping parkland and canal-side strolls, there is plenty of space for dogs to explore and owners to unwind. If you are looking for somewhere different to stretch those legs this weekend, here are some of the best spots in and around the county that welcome four-legged visitors.

Lacock

A wander through Lacock feels like stepping onto a film set. The medieval streets, stone cottages and quiet corners make it a brilliant place for an easy-going walk. Dogs are welcome around the village, and there is a dog walking area in the National Trust car park. You can also head out on riverside routes and countryside paths nearby, including the gentle Lacock village walk and the pleasure garden trail with views of the Abbey. In winter, dogs are allowed in the Abbey Grounds, giving you even more to explore during the quieter months.

Stourhead

Stourhead is a firm favourite for dog owners. The wider estate is open year-round for walks, and during set times in summer, plus every day from December to February, dogs on leads can enjoy the famous landscape garden too. It is classed as a three pawprint rated place, so facilities are geared up for visitors with pets. There are miles of waymarked trails, including the Alfred’s Tower walk at 5.5 miles, the Bonham Wood route, which is livestock-free, and the historic Terrace Ride. Expect lakeside views, woodland paths and rolling countryside all in one outing.

Avebury Stone Circle

Few places compare to walking your dog among standing stones older than the pyramids. Dogs on leads are welcome within parts of the stone circle, and the wider Avebury landscape offers miles of open space. The circular walk around Silbury Hill gives you a proper sense of the scale of this prehistoric site. Avebury is a two pawprint rated place, and you will find water bowls and treats available, which always go down well after a longer ramble.

Stonehenge Landscape

The Stonehenge Landscape offers free permissive access managed by the National Trust, and dogs are welcome across much of the area. There can be occasional restrictions, so it is worth checking before setting off, but generally it is a fantastic spot for a longer countryside hike. Wide open skies, chalk grassland and far-reaching views make it ideal for energetic breeds who like a proper stretch. When preparing for a long day out in the vast, open areas, safety and peace of mind are paramount. As a highly recommended piece of equipment to guard against the risk of a dog becoming distracted, you may want to bring a gps tracker.

Old Sarum and Ludgershall Castle

History lovers are spoilt for choice. At Old Sarum, dogs on leads are allowed around the castle earthworks, and the outer bailey is popular with local walkers. Ludgershall Castle, on the edge of Salisbury Plain, also welcomes dogs on leads, with additional routes leading into nearby woodland. These are ideal if you want something shorter but still packed with character.

Salisbury Cathedral and Lydiard Park

For something a little different, well-behaved dogs are allowed inside Salisbury Cathedral, giving you the chance to combine a town visit with a cultural stop. Lydiard Park, on the outskirts of Swindon, offers wide open grounds for a relaxed afternoon walk, although dogs are not permitted in the walled gardens.

Wiltshire really does make it easy to bring your dog along for the adventure. With ancient monuments, landscaped estates, woodland trails and historic villages all within easy reach, there is no shortage of options for your next day out. Clip on the lead, check the weather and get exploring.
