A schoolgirl who ‘ran out in front of a car’ has been seriously injured in Devizes.

Emergency services were called to a road traffic collision involving a pedestrian in Nursteed Road shortly after 4pm yesterday (Monday, 2 December).

A 14-year-old girl was struck by a silver Chevrolet Spark near Devizes Town Football Club. The car was left with a large bullseye in the windscreen.

The incident saw a large 999 response over concerns the youngster had suffered significant head injuries in the impact. She was rushed to Salisbury District Hospital.

Wiltshire Police closed the road while they awaited the results of scans and assessments at the hospital, fearing a forensic collision investigation may have to be carried out.

However, doctors were able to confirm that the girl had not sustained any life-changing or life-threatening injuries – thus not requiring the full-scale investigation.

The teenager is understood to have suffered numerous broken bones and has a long recovery ahead.

Officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit confirmed that the crash was caught on CCTV and there were many witnesses, including schoolchildren.

The driver of the car remained at the scene and it is understood the collision was unavoidable.

The road was reopened before 9pm and recovery of the vehicle took place after 9.30pm.

Witnesses, or anyone with information, should contact Wiltshire Police by calling 101 quoting log number 216 of 2 December. Alternatively, make a report online.
