Emergency services were called to Caen Hill Locks in Devizes at around 10.30am yesterday (Tuesday, 21 May) following reports of a person in the water.

Wiltshire Air Ambulance, a doctor, a Hazardous Area Response Team and two double-crewed ambulances attended the scene alongside police and the fire service.

The woman, aged in her 40s, was rescued from the water and giving treatment on the towpath – before being airlifted to the Bristol Royal Infirmary in a life-threatening condition.

Despite the best efforts of medics, she was pronounced dead in hospital.

It’s believed the woman suffered a medical episode while riding her bicycle, and subsequently fell into the canal. However, this has not been confirmed by authorities.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “A woman in her 40s has sadly died after she was found unconscious in the Kennet and Avon Canal, Rowde yesterday morning (Tuesday).

“Officers were called to the canal at around 10.30am but despite best efforts from emergency teams she died from her injuries in hospital.

“An investigation is underway into the circumstances of what happened.

“If you can help with our enquiries, please contact us on 101 quoting log number 92 of yesterday’s date (21/05).”
