The suspect in a crash that killed a pony faces no further action, it has been confirmed.

Police were called to reports of the tragic collision in Methuen Park, Chippenham, on 23 July 2021.

A two-wheeled cart being towed by a pony – and ridden by a man and a child – struck a parked Range Rover at around 2pm in the afternoon.

The two occupants of the cart fled the scene on foot, leaving their pony for dead on the ground. The animal passed away from its injuries a short time later.

The owner of the damaged Range Rover was unaware of the incident unfolding outside – until an “almost hysterical” woman knocked on his door informing him of the situation.

“I went straight out and it (the pony) had obviously died on impact with my car”, he said at the time.

Adding: “The pony was still attached to a small two-seater cart and the people on it had run away.”

In February last year, Wiltshire Police sought to reassure the community that the investigation was ongoing – confirming that a suspect was identified from CCTV and attended a voluntary interview.

A case was sent to the Crown Prosecution Service, which did not proceed to court. The case was closed and the suspect was released with no further action.
