‘A few dangerous drivers’ spoiled a Swindon car meet on Saturday evening.

Wiltshire Police say the majority of car enthusiasts attending the meet were well-behaved, simply showcasing their vehicles – but some weren’t.

Swindon Magistrates’ Court will on Monday (23 May) decide whether or not to grant a partial closure order application for a car park in Bridgemead, where groups of motorists have been meeting during the evenings over the past months.

At last night’s meet, police said “a few” drivers spoiled it for others by driving dangerous – which included speeding, racing, wheel spinning and drifting.

The force says criminal damage was also committed by drivers whose vehicle tyres left burn marks on the ground, damaging private property.

Roads policing officers also caught a driver leaving the meet at 117mph on the A419. The driver was reported to court for the offence.

“This has caused members of the public, businesses and the wider community feeling alarmed, harassed, and distressed”, a spokesperson said.

They added: “The local neighbourhood teams have been working in conjunction with partner agencies, as well as the land owners and the retail outlets to deter and resolve the issues raised by the public.

“We want to reassure the public that these issues are being taken seriously and that we are working to make the roads safer.”

A partial closure notice is currently in place and prohibits unauthorised access to the Bridgemead car park, outside Sainsbury’s and B&M, between the hours of 10.15pm and 7am daily.

The magistrates will decide if this is to be a long-running order at the hearing on Monday. Equally, they could decide to reject the application.
