Police yesterday took to social media to tell local residents they could no longer standing on a bridge over the A303 and wave at lorry drivers passing through Mere.

The post – effectively banning people from waving on overbridges – on a local police Facebook page attracted a barrage of negative comments, with most people against the police’s approach to the situation.

In a statement release to Wiltshire 999s this morning, a spokesperson wrote: “A local PCSO posted on the Mere Facebook page yesterday regarding reports of members of the public gathering on the overbridge on the A303, encouraging lorry drivers to sound their horns.

“This was posted following a complaint from a local resident, as there were concerns that those people gathering may be breaching the current covid-19 restrictions on travel. It has since become clear that this is likely not the case and those involved are in fact from the same households.

“We fully appreciate the work lorry drivers are doing to ensure supermarket shelves are stocked and recognise that small acts like this are no doubt brightening up their day.”
