A smoke plume from a huge wildfire has clouded the skies of west Wiltshire.
Residents have reported a burning smell and a dense grey haze over Warminster, Bradford on Avon, Mere and Frome this morning (Monday).
Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service is understood to have been investigating. However, crews have reportedly told locals that the cause is a blaze in South Wales.
South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS) have been battling a major wildfire near the Llangynidr Reservoir – with wind blowing smoke towards Newport.
It would continue to move smoke in a south-easterly direction, thus hitting parts of west and south Wiltshire.
In the latest update, SWFRS said: “This morning the moorland fire near the Llangynidr Reservoir is still ongoing and crews have been at the scene all weekend and have been containing the spread of the blaze.
“The wind direction this morning has changed and communities towards Blaenavon, Brynmawr, Pontypool and Newport are affected by the smoke this morning.
“As part of our ongoing assessment of the incident, weather conditions and the resources needed, the specialist firefighting helicopter will return today supporting crews of firefighters, contractors and farmers on the ground by reaching hard to reach areas of land.
“We still expect to be at the scene for a few days and we will continue to review our response daily as conditions change.”
In a statement Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that there are no incidents in the county which could be causing the smoke.
A spokesperson said: “There are no incidents within the DWFRS area that would be causing smoke in and around Warminster.
“We can’t rule out on-going incidents in other areas, but we continue to monitor the situation.
“If anyone does see smoke or smell burning, please still call 999.”
