Dog owners in Wiltshire are being urged not to abandon their pets after the council revealed its stray dog kennels are at full capacity.
The local authority has issued a warning about the dangers of abandoning dogs, stressing that owners should seek support if they are struggling to care for their animals.
Wiltshire Council said abandoned dogs can suffer injuries, illness, hunger and stress when left to fend for themselves. They can also be at risk of exploitation.
In a statement, the council said: “We understand that circumstances can change and caring for a dog can sometimes become difficult. However, abandoning a dog is never the answer.”
Owners who are finding it difficult to look after their dogs are being encouraged to speak to family members or friends who may be able to help.
They can also contact local animal rescue and rehoming organisations for advice and support, or seek veterinary assistance if behavioural or health problems are becoming unmanageable.
The council is also encouraging owners to explore reputable rehoming services if they can no longer provide a suitable home for their pet.
It has warned people not to leave dogs tied up in public places or release them into the countryside or onto the streets.
Owners are also being reminded that abandoning a dog can constitute a criminal offence.
A council spokesperson added: “Every dog deserves a safe and responsible future.
“If you can no longer care for your dog, please seek help before making a decision you’ll regret.”
