A litter of newborn kittens found in a crusher on a landfill site have been rescued.
Volunteers from Shelter Paws Cat Rescue were alerted on Monday (13 April) after workers at Crapper and Sons in Royal Wootton Bassett found the animals while servicing machinery.
The charity said it received a call from the site reporting that five kittens had been found inside a crusher that was being prepared to return to operation.
‘They found five baby kittens in the crusher that was [being] serviced to be brought back into work’, a spokesperson said.
Adding that there was ‘no sign of a mum’, so volunteers attended to collect the them. Since being rescued the kittens are being bottle-fed around the clock.
The spokesperson added: “And hopefully all take to me feeding them as there new mum. And hopefully mum can be found.”
Workers at the site said the kittens had to be moved quickly due to machinery being cleaned and readied for transport.
John Williams, who works at Crapper and Sons and found the animals, said: “Unfortunately, no sign of mum, as yet, but I had to move these beautiful kittens from where they were, due to the machine being cleaned and readying for transport…”
It’s believed the kittens were born to a feral cat.
The rescue says efforts are ongoing to locate the mother cat, although the busy industrial setting, with lorries moving in and out, may make this difficult.
