A police watchdog referral has been made after a woman was killed in a crash near Royal Wootton Bassett – and a man was arrested at the scene.
Emergency services responded to reports of a head-on collision involving two cars on the B4696 Lydiard Plain at around 6.05pm on Tuesday (30 June).
The fatal incident involved an orange Peugeot 107 travelling northbound and a black Vauxhall Astra travelling southbound.
The driver of the Peugeot, a woman aged in her 70s, was sadly declared dead at the scene. Her next of kin have been informed.
The driver of the Vauxhall, a 43-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and causing death by driving while unfit through drink or drugs.

He has been taken to hospital to be treated for serious injuries and will then be questioned in connection with the incident once fit.
A passenger in the Vauxhall, a teenage girl, was also taken to hospital to be treated for her injuries.
Wiltshire Police has made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) due to previous involvement with the suspect.
