A new speed monitoring camera has been installed on a Swindon road as part of a borough-wide pilot scheme.
Swindon Borough Council has placed the ANPR device on Okus Road, Old Town, to identify drivers travelling above the legal speed limit.
It is the first of five cameras set to be introduced at locations across the borough in the coming months.
The scheme is aimed at motorists exceeding limits in low-speed areas, with warning letters due to be issued in a bid to improve driving standards.
A council spokesperson said: “An ANPR camera has been installed on Okus Road to monitor drivers travelling more than the legal speed limit.
“Alongside this first camera, four more will also be installed at various other locations across the Borough in the coming months.
“The pilot scheme intends to identify drivers speeding in low-speed areas and send out warnings so that they can change their driving habits.
“Vehicles will have their licence plates scanned when in range of the camera and, if they’re going over the speed limit, this could result in a warning letter and information being shared with the police.
“Later in the year, these cameras be used to also to check whether vehicles are insured, taxed and have an up-to-date MOT.
“If the initial trials are successful, the Council will look to roll out the initiative to more locations.”
