A woman’s been taken to hospital after a lorry left the M4 down an embankment this morning.

Emergency services were called to the road traffic collision off the westbound carriageway between Junctions 16 (Swindon) and 17 (Chippenham) at just before 10am.

The female driver was trapped within the cab suffering from chest pains.

Wiltshire Air Ambulance was in attendance alongside four fire crews from Swindon, Westlea, Royal Wootton Bassett and Gloucester.

The casualty was extricated by firefighters before being taken to hospital.

A spokesperson for South Western Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 9.50am about an incident on the M4 westbound near junction 16.

“The caller told us a lorry had left the road and gone down an embankment.

“We responded to a female patient with chest pain, and transported her to hospital by land ambulance for further care.
