A Wiltshire man has been charged with killing a milkman in an early morning crash.
Stuart Withers died after being struck by a car while standing behind his stationary van in Exeter Street, Salisbury, on 22 November 2024.
The milkman, who ran Shrewton Dairy and previously chaired Shrewton United Football Club, was hit while making a delivery shortly before around 6am.
Following a lengthy forensic investigation into the circumstances of the fatal road traffic collision, police have charged a 30-year-old man.
Wiltshire Police said that Callan Howitt, of South Street, Warminster, will face an allegation that he caused Stuart’s death by careless driving.
He is due to appear at Salisbury Magistrates’ Court on 20 February.
After Stuart’s passing, his family released a heart-wrenching tribute.
It said: “We know how much dad/grandad loved Shrewton FC and all the players.
“We grew up hearing the many stories he had of football, including the laughs on and off the pitch.
“It wasn’t just his skill and management that made him so special, but the ability to find the balance between having fun and a job well done.
“He was a true leader, which was the same in our family. Dad/grandad always showed kindness, wisdom and endless generosity.
“Nothing was ever too much trouble, and we owe him so much for that.
“We are sure it was a privilege to play with or under him, as we consider ourselves the luckiest people in the world to know him so well and call him our dad and grandad.
“We’ll love and miss him, forever and always.”
