Two men have been airlifted to hospital after a head-on crash near Swindon.
999 crews were called to a two-vehicle road traffic collision on a bend in Pavenhill, Purton, at around 3pm this afternoon (Monday).
It involved a grey Honda Jazz and a black Volkswagen Phaeton impacting head-on.
Two air ambulances were scrambled to the scene, with critical care medics providing life-saving care to the drivers of both vehicles alongside local ambulance crews.
The driver of the Volkswagen – a man aged in his 30s from Swindon – was taken to Southmead Hospital by Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance with multiple wounds, including a serious head injury.
The driver of the Honda – a man aged in his 40s from Purton – was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance with multiple serious injuries.
A full forensic collision investigation is underway – and is expected to continue into tomorrow morning (Tuesday, 23 April).
The road – which is shut between B4696 Braydon Road (crossroads) and Pavenhill – isn’t likely to reopen before 8am.
At the time of the crash, a Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Three fire crews are in attendance at a road traffic collision involving two saloon cars on an unclassified road between Braydon crossroads and Purton.
“Firefighters released one of the casualties from their vehicle, and both casualties were attended to by members of the South West Ambulance Service.
“Crews came from Royal Wootton Bassett, Stratton St Margaret, and Swindon. A crew from Westlea was relocated to the centre of Swindon to provide cover. ”
