Work to install traffic lights at Black Dog Crossroads is set to begin this autumn following a series of crashes at the problem junction.
The six-month project on the A360 aims to improve safety at the busy junction between Potterne and Littleton Panell by installing traffic signals and lowering the speed limit for all road users.
The first phase of work will start on Wednesday 3 September, with SSE installing the electrical supply for the traffic lights.
This will involve excavating a trench and laying around 550 metres of new cable, mostly within the carriageway from near Frieth Farm to the crossroads.

Temporary two-way traffic lights will be in place during this phase, switching to four-way control as work approaches the junction.
The scheme will also see drainage system repairs and carriageway resurfacing to prevent future problems and reduce the need for further works in the long term.
This initial stage is due to finish by Monday, 19 October.
The main installation of the traffic signals will start the following day, continuing over the winter months and is expected to be completed by February 2026.
During this time, temporary signals will be in operation on the A360.
As part of the works, side roads will be closed, with the council working with local businesses to maintain access.
Cllr Martin Smith, Cabinet Member for Highways at Wiltshire Council, said: “We’re delighted that work will be starting next month to improve road safety at Black Dog crossroads.
“This is a key junction for many residents, businesses and road users. The installation of traffic signals, alongside a reduced speed limit, will make a real difference in reducing risk and improving traffic flow.
“We’re working closely with our contractors to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum, particularly for school transport and local businesses.
“We thank everyone for their patience while these important improvements are carried out.”
