Police were called to reports of an illegal gathering at in Melksham this afternoon.

Four officers attended the scene in King George V Park in Melksham at around 2.30pm following calls about a group within the skate park – which has been closed in-line with the government’s coronavirus lockdown regulations.

On arrival, officers found at least one adult and four young people – some from separate households – using the facility despite locked gates and signage.

Nearby, the children’s play area was open as usual sparking some debate about whether people should be allowed to use the skate park.

Passersby were torn in opinion, with some stating that the facility is closed and people should not be with in it. Others said it was “ridiculous” the play park close-by was open, where social distancing was even harder.

The police decided to allow those already within the stake park to enjoy it for ten minutes before asking them to move on and dispurse. They left the area as requested, so no enforcement action was taken by officers at the scene.

“In line with our policy, officers engaged with the members of the public and explained the current rules”, a spokesperson for Wiltshire Police told Wiltshire 999s. Adding: “After a short while, they were dispersed so no further enforcement was needed.”
