Police officers and paramedics have attended a Swindon pub this evening, after a suicidal man attempted to fight other drinkers and then ‘sliced his own neck’.
Seven police vehicles were at the scene off Ferndale Road – alongside one ambulance, a rapid response car and a paramedic officer (senior paramedic) in a Land Rover Discovery – at around 5pm.
The dramatic incident happened at the Southbrook Inn on Southbrook Street.
An eyewitness, who doesn’t want to be named but was there as the incident unfolded, told Wiltshire 999s that a man came into the pub talking about how he wanted to kill himself.
A short time later, after trying to fight with a number of pub-goes, he smashed a beer glass against his own head and used a piece of broken glass to slice his own throat, she recalled.
Another eyewitness told of how officers attempted to help the injured man in the car park, before having to use force to get the medical treatment he required.
The man – in his 40s – been taken to Great Western Hospital; it’s understood that he’s in a serious but stable condition and is under police guard.
