A pedestrian has been killed in a horror crash involving a lorry on the M4 near Swindon.

Emergency services were called to a road traffic collision on the eastbound carriageway at Membury Services at around 8.30am this morning (Thursday).

A pedestrian sustained significant injuries on being struck by at least one vehicle. A Scania tractor unit towing a Gregory trailer had front-end damage.

The casualty was pronounced dead at the scene, with Thames Valley Police launching a forensic collision investigation.

While the incident happened in Berkshire, roads policing officers from Wiltshire Police and paramedics from South Western Ambulance Service were among the first in attendance.

The eastbound carriageway between Junction 15 (Swindon) and Junction 14 (Hungerford) is expected to remain closed for several hours.

The closure is causing significant delays on the approach to Junction 15, with motorists being diverted off the motorway.

Traffic on the A346 towards Marlborough is heavy due to an increase in vehicles and ongoing roadworks.

Thames Valley Police are yet to confirm the death officially, or release further details about the circumstances.

In a short statement, a spokesperson for for the force said: “We are currently dealing with a road traffic collision on the M4.

“Junction 15-14 on eastbound, near Membury services is shut.

“There are significant delays and growing tailbacks in the area, and traffic on the westbound carriageway may also be affected.

“Please avoid the area if possible and consider alternative routes while emergency services work at the scene.”

Witnesses or anyone with relevent dashcam footage should contact Thames Valley Police.
