One of Wiltshire’s most incredible monuments, Stonehenge remains both a wonderful mystery as well as one of the biggest attractions in the county and the UK as a whole.
Unsurprisingly almost every form of entertainment has, at one time or another, harnessed the spirit of the henge, as TV shows, movies, books and theatre plays have all either used the henge as a setting or have been entirely inspired by the structure that is thought to date back to as early as 3,000 BC.
However, there is one other entertainment genre that has also been eager to put the henge front and centre. That is online gaming. Here is a look at just some of the online games that have played their part in spreading the legend of Stonehenge.
Labyrinths of World: Stonehenge
The very first video game ever made that featured Stonehenge was a title called Sorcery, which was released all the way back in 1984.
Games have come a long way since then, and more so than ever before people are beginning to game more on their mobile devices rather than on a PC or console. This is why the sort of experience that gamers got from Sorcery back in the day can now be found in a new game called Labyrinths of World: Stonehenge.
This mobile title blends the ancient history of the henge with futuristic aspects, as players are teamed up with an MI6 agent, who has been assigned to a case involving an explosion at the Henge, which has opened up two magic portals. It is whacky and outlandish, but that is exactly what makes it so fun to play.
Classic Casino Games
Another type of online game that is also gaining traction with mobile gamers is the classic casino game, whether it be table games like roulette and blackjack, or more graphically immersive games like slots.
These days there is an online slot game for seemingly every theme that a player could shake a stick at, and so sure enough there are some slots out there that have either adopted imagery from Stonehenge or have aped it so closely that no one can be in any doubt as to what the game’s developers were thinking of when they coded it. Amongst this group of online slot games is Secret of the Stones™, which has a main character who resembles the sort of druid who probably first used the henge all those millennia ago.

There are plenty of other slots like this too, such as Sacred Stones and Asgardian Stones, both off which do not make such direct references to Stonehenge, but certainly borrow aspects of the henge’s setting and overall aesthetic.
Horace
While some games are entirely dedicated to re-creating the magic of the henge, there are others that simply make a fleeting visit, via either a level or platform.
Such is the case in PC and Nintendo Switch platformer Horace, where a household robot goes on an epic adventure to reunite the family he once worked for. The game takes place across a huge amount of destinations and one of them happens to be Stonehenge.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
The most modern game on this list, it was released in 2020, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is one of the latest instalments in this massively popular open world adventure series.
Of course, the bulk of the game is spent exploring Norse and Viking settlements and landscapes, but as it grows more expansive, the game’s narrative does take players to Stonehenge’s sarsen and lintel stones. Because the game’s graphics are so advanced, it can feel as though the player is truly present at the henge, but they can’t sight see for long as there are enemies to do battle with.
