A man died hours after police visited his home in Wiltshire – sparking a referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
Officers were called to a flat in Primrose Place, Durrington, after concerns were raised about the welfare of a man on at about 3.20am on Thursday morning (24 July).
They engaged with the 42-year-old occupant, before leaving the property.
Police were alerted to a medical emergency at the same address shortly after 6am – and attended the scene at the request of the ambulance service.
Despite the best efforts of medics, he was pronounced dead a short time later. His next of kin has been informed, Wiltshire Police confirmed.
“Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time”, a spokesperson added.
The flat was declared a crime scene, with detectives and forensic investigators attending.
Due to prior police contact with the deceased man, the mandatory referral was made to the IOPC.
The police watchdog will assess the evidence of the case, and then make a decision about whether a full investigation is required in the circumstances.
Wiltshire Police said that it “would not be appropriate to comment further”.
